Damage report following the de-masting of the S/Y AURIGA

At the request of Bettina Budka, managing director of Star Yachting I attended the above vessel while afloat in the port of Mandraki, Rhodos on the 10/07/12 to survey the damage sustained during its de-masting while traveling to Rhodos from Marmaris.

On arrival I found the vessel moored stern-to the dock with the damaged mast and rigging lying ashore (See photo 1).

The captain was on board at the time of the incident. He described that the mast initially collapsed just below the first set of spreaders and fell towards the starboard side (see photos 2 & 3). It then sheared at the joining point which is located about one and a half metres up from the mast foot (see photo 4).

The captain and crew cut the shrouds on the port side and managed to lash the damaged mast to the starboard side of the vessel. They made their way to Rhodos, where they managed to lift the mast onto the dockside.

Careful examination of the mast shows no signs of corrosion or obvious reason for the collapse. All the rigging terminals were inspected and found in good order. The stainless steel rigging wire was observed in good condition with no broken strands or rusting to the terminals or wire.
